La Jolla sits under the marine layer most mornings, and that changes how dryer vents behave here. Overnight humidity at the coast often runs 80 to 90 percent, so lint doesn't stay light and fluffy inside a duct. It packs damp and dense, especially in the last few feet before the hood. Dry cycles stretch out. Homeowners tell us the dryer takes two runs to finish a load of towels, and that's usually the first sign. Then fall arrives, Santa Ana winds push inland dust and pollen toward the coast, and that grit settles into vent hoods and mixes with what's already there. Inland valleys run 15 to 20 degrees hotter and drier, and the chaparral dust load out there is a year-round factor, but the coastal problem is moisture and the way it makes lint stick.
The calls we take in La Jolla split along how the house was built. Postwar tract homes from the 1950s through the 1970s put laundry in the garage or a service porch against an exterior wall, so the run is short, 4 to 10 feet, straight out the side. Those are quick, and some of them don't need clearing yet. We say so when that's the case. The condos, townhomes and two-story stock built from the 1980s on moved laundry upstairs or into an interior closet, and those runs go 15 to 35 feet with several elbows before terminating at the roof. Long runs with turns hold more, and they hold it longer. We also still find flexible foil and white vinyl transition duct behind dryers in homes that haven't been updated since the 1980s. That's the most common failure point we see. It crushes behind the machine and traps lint, and replacing it falls under dryer vent repair or, if the run needs rethinking entirely, new vent installation.
On site the crew brings a rotary brush on a flexible line, a vacuum that captures at the source instead of pushing lint into the room, and a meter to read airflow at the hood. We check airflow before we touch anything and again when we're done, so there's a number to compare. We pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition, brush and vacuum the full run from both ends where access allows, clear the hood and check that the flapper actually moves. We work behind gas and electric units, stacked units in closets, and the roof terminations common in newer buildings. If you want the airflow reading and duct condition documented without a full cleaning, that's a dryer vent inspection. The things that move cost here are run length, how many elbows are in the path, whether the termination is at the roof or a side wall, and whether the old foil or vinyl transition needs replacing while we're back there. A garage run in a 1960s tract home is not the same job as a third-floor closet venting through the roof.

How we decide between cleaning, repair and replacement

Marine layer humidity matters. Overnight coastal moisture packs lint damp and dense, so buildup behaves differently than in dry inland valleys. Santa Ana winds load exterior hoods with dust and pollen. A stuck hood damper often explains a slow dryer better than the duct does.
